#35 – Indy PopCon Conversation

We interview the co-creator of Indy PopCon, Shawn Smith. Indy PopCon is the largest comic book convention in the state of Indiana, and are expecting a turnout of 15,000 people or more. Indy PopCon is at the Indiana Convention Center from May 30th through June 1st, 2014.

Guests include Ron Glass from Firefly, John DiMaggio the voice of Futurama’s Bender, creator of Mystery Science Theater 3000 Joel Hodgson, Nicholas Brendon from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Esme Bianco from Game of Thrones, co-creator of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Kevin Eastman, Rocky the Red Power Ranger Steve Cardenas and over 50 other guests. There will be comic book dealers from 12 different states, and one particular vender is bringing over 100,000 comic books to sell. But it’s not just comic books. Indy PopCon wants people to be able to engage and participate. There will be panels and workshops talking about how to break into the comic and game industries. You can also play video games and tournaments against other people.

You can also get a free drawing of yourself by Norm Breyfogle from DC Comics and Batman, as well as Val Mayerik from Conan, Marvel Comics and Howard the Duck. More artists are planned to be announced leading up to the event, as well.

Paul and Storm will be performing a free concert, and so will the Harp Twins. There’s also cosplay events and live podcasts going on during the event.

Tickets for the Indy PopCon are available at indypopcon.com/tickets, and a 3-day pass is only $45. You can also get an exclusive VIP experience, which allows you to go out to eat with some of the people who helped create Game of Thrones, as well as a special small interactive meet-and-greet panel with Joel Hodgson from Mystery Science Theater 3000. You will also get to cut everybody in line for autographs with the VIP experience, as well as enter the convention early every day so you can avoid the crowds.
